INTEC held the 11th Annual Congress of Economics and Business Students

SANTO DOMINGO. – The Department of Economy and Business of the Instituto Tecnológico de Santo Domingo (INTEC) held the eleventh edition of the Annual Congress of Economics and Business Students (CANE XI), under the motto “Leading the New Digital Economy”.

For three days, the congress brought together national and international experts, business leaders, and students in a space for academic exchange that addressed the main challenges and opportunities of technological transformation in the economy and business.

The Dean of the Department of Economics and Business, Shajira Nazir, led the opening ceremony and highlighted that this edition of the congress "It excites us and also urges us, because it invites us to reflect on the future of our careers, the labor market, and what our professional practice and daily life will be like in an increasingly digitalized environment.".

Nazir emphasized that digitalization "transforms, energizes, and generates new markets, but it also destroys others, and that's why talking about the digital economy is impossible without talking about fair and free competition in markets." He added that "guaranteeing clear rules of the game becomes essential to protect both consumers and businesses and ensure that economic development is sustainable and inclusive."

The opening conference was led by María Elena Vázquez Taveras, president of the Board of Directors of ProCompetencia, who gave the talk "The Defense of Competition as an Economic Driver in the Digital Age." Vázquez Taveras stated that "digital transformation is not just a technological change; it is the force that is redefining the rules of the global economic game" and cited the case of India as an example, which "demonstrates how an effective innovation and competition strategy can completely transform a country's economy."

Vásquez Taveras explained that "the Dominican Republic has taken significant steps toward the digital economy," highlighting that e-commerce will reach a monthly value of more than 23 billion pesos by 2025. However, he warned that "structural challenges persist that require urgent attention, such as high informality and market concentration, which limit competition and innovation."

Among the speakers who participated in this edition of CANE were Saúl Carranza (Google), Mariano Sanz (Kiwi), Wanda Montero (IPSOS), Diego Oscar Amondaray (Nippy) and Carlos Flaquer (Flai Logistics), among others, who They addressed topics such as artificial intelligence, Big Data, fintech, logistics 4.0 and creativity in the digital age.

With the implementation of CANE, the Department of Economics and Business offered students a space for learning and development that transcends the classroom. This is why this event has established itself as a meeting point for academia, the business sector, and young leaders.

Since its inception, the conference has brought together more than 150 speakers and impacted thousands of students and professionals, establishing itself as a benchmark for academic innovation and youth leadership.
