INTEC scholarship to 1,472 young FEET of the country in 26 years

SANTO DOMINGO. The Instituto Tecnológico de Santo Domingo (INTEC) awarded scholarships to 39 outstanding young people from high schools and colleges from different parts of the country through its INTEC Program with Outstanding Students (PIES), with which 1,472 totals scholarships in 26 years.

The young people, chosen from among 619 applicants, were honored during the XXVI act of recognition of Young National Talents, which was held in the Julio Ravelo Room of the Source of the INTEC library, with the participation of authorities and members of the Board of Regents of the academy, as well as representatives of the companies and institutions that sponsor the PIES Program.

The speech of motivation of the act was pronounced by the student of the career of Industrial Engineering John Paul Guzmán Díaz, Young National Talent 2012 (Round XXV), while the central speech was in charge of the guest speaker engineer Miguel A. Estepan, Graduate Featured INTEC 2007 and general manager of Esso in the Dominican Republic.

The event was headed by Rolando M. Guzmán, rector of INTEC, Leandra Tapia, Academic vice-chancellor, Bernardo Echavarría, dean of the Division of Student Services and Onamenci Guerra, coordinator of the Educational Grants and Credit Unit.

Highlights among highlights
Of the students selected in the PIES 2013 round, the three highest-scoring students were recognized, grouped in the high school and high school categories.

In the high school category The student Mabel Alicia Gerónimo García of the Liceo Republic of Paraguay, of Santo Domingo, ranked first; in second place, Eddy Frank Vásquez Sánchez of the Polytechnic Institute Professor Juan Bosch, of Santo Domingo, and in third place Carla Alejandrina Zorrilla Muñoz of the Salesian Technical Institute, of Santo Domingo.

While in the category of schools Gisselle Lisselotte Beras Vásquez from My Little Paradise School, La Romana; the second place Marcelle Montes De Oca Acosta of the San Gabriel De La Dolorosa School, of Santo Domingo and the third place for Marjorie Pons Piñeyro of the Santo Domingo School, of Santo Domingo.

The PIES is a program of responsibility of the INTEC, which finances the program with the support of companies and graduates. Of the 39 students recognized on this occasion, two were granted scholarships by the company Grupo Ramos, one by the Central Bank of the Dominican Republic, one by the Dominican Electronic Market (MED) and one by ALPHA Sociedad de Valores.

PIES evaluation process
The PIES Program identifies and selects outstanding bachelors from public and private schools throughout the country, in order to provide them with the opportunity to acquire high quality professional training and high social commitment at INTEC. For this, candidates must have scores on 80 points in all subjects of the baccalaureate, an average of 90 in the core subjects and undergo academic and psychological tests in the institution.

Of the 619 applications received in this round, 323 students were evaluated and selected for their performance in the tests to 49 students, of which 39 pursue the race of their choice in INTEC and the remaining only opted for recognition. The 77% of the students PIES has obtained the highest academic honors

Profile Miguel A. Estepan
Miguel Estepan graduated from INTEC in Industrial Engineering (1998, Magna CumLaude). He completed postgraduate studies at the Universidad Católica Madre y Maestra, obtaining a Master's degree in Business Administration in 1993.

In 1989, it joins Codeine's Trainee program. At 1990, he enters the Free Trade Zone of the Americas in the American company American Tourists (Suitcase Maker) as Production Supervisor; there he worked for 3 years, going from supervising 30 employees to 150 when choosing a job offer in Esso Standard Oil as an Operations Engineer, going through a total of 13 positions in his 15 years of career development to occupy his Current position of General Manager since 2003.

Miguel Estepan has been an active member of the board of AMCHAM and Director of ASIEX (Association of Foreign Investment Companies).

In 26 years, the PIES exhibits among its main achievements: 

• 1,472 grants awarded.
• 2,157 Young Talents National and 220 National Promises.
• 9,060 participation requests, from public lycées and private schools throughout the national geography.
• 2,496 young people recognized, coming from different public and private schools in the country.
• The 77% of PIES students has obtained the highest academic honors.
• The PIES currently has more than 280 scholarship students, of which 39 entered INTEC during the August-October / 2013 quarter.
