First interuniversity PhD program in Mathematics will begin


SANTO DOMINGO. -The Instituto Tecnológico de Santo Domingo (INTEC), next to the Autonomous University of Santo Domingo (UASD) and the Pontifical Catholic University Mother and Teacher (PUCMM) will teach the first Interuniversity Doctoral Program in Mathematics, which seeks train high level researchers and specialists in mathematics and encourage research of that science in the Dominican Republic.

The universities, with the technical and financial support of the Ministry of Higher Education, Science and Technology (MESCyT) On representation of the Dominican State, looking for support productive development and national competitivenessas well as a academic collaboration with international experts and researchers from an interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary perspective.

“The doctorate has as its main goal to lead the student towards the frontier of updated knowledge in a specific field of mathematics, so that he can do a doctoral thesis that presents original results with relevant contributions,” contemplates the collaboration agreement.

Under the agreement, this is the first Doctorate in Mathematics taught in the Dominican Republic, and is open to the international collaboration of prestigious universities and tradition in the field of mathematical research. In that sense, and for the development of the first and second phase, the PhD has the collaboration of the University of Puerto Rico in Río Piedras and the Polytechnic University of Valencia.

The doctorate that will begin in November will have an academic load of at least 60 credits, of which twenty (20) credits will correspond to the training cycle and forty (40) credits will correspond to the research cycle, and will have a minimum duration of three and maximum of five years.

Interested professionals may enroll through one of the participating universities, which will have a maximum of 10 admitted per year.

Some of the objectives of the doctorate is to contribute to the formation of the human capital required to provide a solid and updated math training within the curricular offer of the universities, both in the degree and in the postgraduate, especially in the areas of science, technology and engineering.

It also aims to significantly increase research activities that lead to the creation and publication of new mathematical knowledge, and contribute to the creation of academic and institutional structures, required for scientific research.
