INDRHI and INTEC certify erosion modeling professionals in watersheds

Santo Domingo. The National Institute of Hydraulic Resources (INDRHI) and the Instituto Tecnológico de Santo Domingo (INTEC) certified 18 professionals in Modeling of Erosion Processes in Basins and Sedimentation in Reservoirs.

The participants, ten employees of the INDRHI and eight students of the Master's Program in Sanitary and Environmental Engineering of INTEC, updated their knowledge about the loss of capacity of the dams, a global problem that particularly affects the Dominican Republic, since the supply of Water for consumption and agricultural irrigation of some provinces depends on these large civil infrastructure works.

The 30 hours course is part of a collaboration agreement between both institutions aimed at strengthening the training of human resources and research related to the water sector and the management of water resources in general. As part of the agenda of that agreement, the joint development of short courses and specialized training for INDRHI staff and INTEC students was contemplated.

The participants were also trained in the management of the WMS software (Watershed Modeling System) to model the behavior of the basins before the occurrence of different atmospheric phenomena and extreme events to determine their influence on the contribution of sediments to the reservoirs.

The rector of INTEC, Rolando M. Guzmán, and the director of INDRHI, Olgo Fernández, had a meeting to clarify the main aspects covered by the inter-institutional agreement and define future actions, due to the importance of this sector in the country.
