Forming doctors with ethical sense

SANTO DOMINGO. The students of Medicine Instituto Tecnológico de Santo Domingo (INTEC) will study special topics of the Bioethics Education Program of the United Nations Organization for Education, Science and Culture (UNESCO), as part of a cooperation agreement signed between both institutions in July of the 2015 year.

The initiative seeks to promote training in bioethics of future doctors in the country and the region.

The coordinator of the INTEC Center for Bioethics (CENINBIO), Miguel Suazo, explained that during the February-April quarter the development of the Base Program of studies on Bioethics began in the subjects under the responsibility of that Center. He argued that dozens of students who take the course new ethical challenges in medicine will learn about moral uncertainty in medicine and its link with the defense of human rights for 10 weeks.

In July of 2015, the Rector of INTEC Rolando Guzmán received in the rectory the person in charge of the UNESCO office for Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay, Lidia Brito, with whom he signed the agreement that contemplates that UNESCO would contribute the program, the material bibliographic and some of the teachers, while INTEC, in addition to teachers, would be in charge of the evaluations among other responsibilities. 

INTEC has more than 25 years of experience in teaching Bioethics and 15 in conducting the only master's degree in Bioethics offered in the country, and which has more than a hundred graduates and graduates. Through CENINBIO, INTEC has signed important collaboration agreements on Bioethics issues with international entities such as Unesco, Felaibe, RedBioética, and maintains contacts with Latin American universities that also teach in that area.
