Students from four schools present works in tribute to Juan Bolívar Díaz


In "A day with an author and his work", Babeque Secundaria, Lux Mundi, Santa Teresita and Triumphare present pieces inspired by the life of the journalist

Santo Domingo. More than one hundred students from four schools presented plays and performances inspired by the life and work of Juan Bolívar Díaz, a journalist with 44 years of experience, noted for his contributions to radio, press and television journalism, as well as the development of society civil society, democracy and Human Rights in the country.

During the act of “A day with an author and his work”, which 17 has been carrying out the Instituto Tecnológico de Santo Domingo (INTEC), the future high school graduates paid tribute to the first Dominican journalist graduated from a foreign school, Carlos Septién García de México, from where he graduated from 1967 before standing out as director of press, radio and television media.

With the piece "Permanent Restlessness", Babeque Secundaria did not miss the opportunity to demand 4% of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) for the State to invest in Education, with a display of yellow umbrellas to open and close, before an audience made up of personalities from the field of communication, businessmen and culture, among them the president of the National Association of Young Entrepreneurs (ANJE), Lara Guerrero, Miguel Guerrero, Andrés L. Mateo, Fausto Rosario, Silvio Herasme, Quiterio Cedeño, Ramón Colombo, Rafael Toribio, Lidia Ariza and Altagracia López. Also the regents of INTEC Mary Fernández, Bernardo Vega, Claudia Franchesca De los Santos and Mercedes Hernández, among others.

The Lux Mundi, with "experimental theatrical proposal", also demanded a change in the direction of the country, through the representations of clowns; the emphasis of Díaz's life for social and rights was also present "Permanence of the ideal and the word", of the Triumphare School and the presentation of the documentary "Juan Bolívar Díaz: El hombre," by Santa Teresita.

"Society is a sum of interests and the media should be a channel that allows the expression of this sum"said the honoree in the dialogue with the students, after the presentation of the works. "Our dreams and desires travel faster than social changes. I have 24 years and 9 months saying the same about needs and sometimes I start to despair, but social changes are not so fast. Utopia fuels the wheel of history. "

 "A day with the author and his work", coordinated from 1995 by the Social Sciences and Humanities Department of INTEC, is an educational program that pays homage in life to outstanding Dominicans and Dominicans whose intellectual, artistic, scientific and / or technological work , serves as an example to the youth of the most exalting values ​​of Dominicanness.

 The dynamic integrates students of various schools and the Social Sciences and Humanities Area of ​​INTEC to a cultural day of artistic expressions: theater, graphic and audiovisual works inspired by the life and work of the honoree and prepared by the students. At the same time, high school students have the opportunity to interview the author, which is a deeply enriching experience for them.

INTEC has recognized: Virgilio Díaz Grullón (1995), Elsa Núñez (1996), Gustavo Tavares (1997), Eugenio de Jesús Marcano (1998), Rafael Solano (1999), Mary Pérez de Marranzini (2000), Jorge Cela ( 2001), María Ugarte (2002), Enrique Armenteros (2003), Mariano Lebrón S. (2004), Freddy Ginebra (2005), Iván García (2006), Alberto Morales (2007), Marcio Veloz M. (2008) and Soucy de Pellerano (2009) and José Alcántara Almánzar (2010).

The event was held in the Julio Ravelo room of the INTEC library fountain.

 A life in the media

 Juan Bolívar Díaz S., Teleantillas Press Director and main driver of the Uno + Uno Program, was born at Ingenio Consuelo (San Pedro de Macoris, Dominican Republic), the 24 of May of 1945.

 Before becoming a journalist, he entered the seminary to become a priest. "I came to journalism trying to exercise my vocation of priesthood and teaching, which I still believe are possible."

 In 1967 he graduated from the Carlos Septién García School of Journalism in Mexico, DF. In this city, he worked as editor and later as deputy director of the press of the National Center for Social Communication (1966-67). Once back in the country, he was successively director of the press of the radio stations HIN (1968), Radio Cristal (1969), Radio Comercial (1969-71), Radio Popular (1975-77), as well as editor of the newspaper Ultima Hora (1972-74) and editor of the newspaper El Sol (1977-82). His entrepreneurial spirit led him to found and direct the weekly Firme (1976) and the daily El Nuevo Diario (1981-84).

 After these significant achievements, he ventured into television as  Press Director of Teleantillas (1987), producer of the news One more Uno and the weekly magazine Jornada Extra (from 1992). From 2001 he works as a political analyst in the newspaper Hoy.

 Among the important management positions he has held are those of Secretary General of the National Union of Professional Journalists (1972-73), President of the Dominican College of Journalists (1988-90) and Vice President of the Latin American Federation of Journalists (1988-91) . He has also taught at the Carlos Septién García School of Journalism (Mexico, DF., 1970-71) and at the Department of Social Communication of the Autonomous University of Santo Domingo (since 1974). His fruitful professional career has earned him general recognition materialized in awards and recognitions of great relevance, such as the Rosa Cisneros Information Award from the International Family Planning Federation (1994), Recognition from the Dominican College of Journalists and the Association of Professional Journalists (1998), Supreme Laurel of Human Rights Justice and Peace in the Dr. Pedro Henríquez Ureña Degree (1998), Order of Duarte, Sánchez and Mella in the Knight Degree (1999), Caonabo de Oro Award (2002), of the Dominican Association of Journalists and Writers.

 Member of the Board of Regents of the Technological Institute of Santo Domingo (1978-84), is founder and member of the National Council of Civic Participation Citizen Movement (1993). He is married to Ada Wiscovitch Carlo, and is the father of two children: Hilda Generosa (1977) and Juan Gabriel (1985).

Regular speaker at national and international congresses, panels, meetings and seminars, Díaz has written the book Electoral Trauma (1996) and the Dominican chapter of the book The State of Freedom of Expression in Central America, Mexico and the Dominican Republic (2005), sponsored by the Inter-American Institute of Human Rights.
