They deliver prizes of the first contest of journalistic of sort

The journalists Deyanira Polanco, Riamny Méndez and Bethania Apolinar were winners of the first, second and third place respectively of the first version of the Annual Journalistic Contest: Gender equality for a life without violence.

The contest, organized by Philip Morris in the Dominican Republic, the Dominican Association of Journalists with a Gender Perspective and the Center for Gender Studies of the Instituto Tecnológico de Santo Domingo (INTEC), recognized these journalists with RD $ 100,000, RD $ 75,000 and RD $ 50,000 for their winning work.

The jury, composed of journalists Margarita Cordero, Juan Bolívar Díaz, Mirtha Rodríguez Calderón and specialists Lourdes Contreras and Magaly Pineda, awarded first place to Deyanira Polanco for her work "Thousands of cases and only three convictions" published by 26 October of 2010 in the newspaper Listín Diario. This report analyzes how psychological aggression, being the most denounced by women, is the least condemned in the courts of the country.

The second place went to Riamny Méndez, for her work "Weapons in the house raise the risk of women being assaulted" published the 1 of July of 2010 in the weekly Clave. The work portrays the drama that many women suffer when they are victims of their partners who own firearms in the home.

The third place corresponded to Bethania Apolinar for her work "Sexual abuse limits the development of children" published by the 29 of October of 2010 in the newspaper Listín Diario, in which it is denounced how sexual abuse is the second type of violence that Minors suffer.

At the end of the award, the Director of Corporate Affairs of Philip Morris, Carlos Ferdinand, announced that in the second edition of the Competition radio and television journalists may also participate in the Contest. Likewise, he reiterated Philip Morris' social commitment to Dominican society to contribute to the solution of the problem of gender violence.

For his part, Adalberto Grullón, on behalf of the Dominican Association of Journalists with a Gender Perspective, reiterated the importance of the role of journalists in solving the problem of gender violence.

Lourdes Contreras, coordinator of the Center for Gender Studies of INTEC, considered that all the efforts made by the different agencies to deal with violence against women and intrafamily are still insufficient.

The award ceremony of the Contest was held in the Julio Ravelo room of the INTEC Fountain.
