The event was also attended by Judith Ravin, Press Attaché of the Embassy of the United States, Duty Greeene, Economic Adviser of USAID, Miguel J. Escala, Rector of INTEC, Indhira de Jesus, Director of the Program of Environmental Protection, and Dr. José Contreras, Manager of the Environmental Protection Program.

The Prize consisted of RD $ 100,000.00 (one hundred thousand pesos) for a first place in the Written Press Category and an honorable mention with an RD $ 50,000.00 prize (fifty thousand pesos).

This award will be held every year from this first version, in recognition of the important role played by the media in raising awareness and awareness of Dominican society on the need to protect the environment and realities such as desertification, shortages of water, climate change and latent threats to biodiversity.

During the event, the next call was open, in which the reports or series of reports from the written press, digital press, television or documentaries, published from the 1 of May of 2011 to the 30 of April of 2012, may be included in some medium of written, digital or television communication whose theme revolves around the protection of the environment

Environmental Protection Program

The Environmental Protection Program seeks to strengthen institutional capacities in the Dominican Republic for better protection of environmental quality and biodiversity, providing technical assistance, training and equipment to national institutions, mainly the Ministry of the Environment. It is executed by The Nature Conservancy (TNC) and its partners INTEC, CEBSE and PRONATURA.

The USAID Program for Environmental Protection has a duration of five years, with a contribution of 10 million dollars, and is structured in four basic components: Institutional strengthening for the effective application of environmental laws; Conservation of biodiversity; Market-based conservation; and Improvement in the environmental performance of the private sector.

The National Award for Environmental Journalism seeks to highlight the role played by the media in the protection of the environment, by dedicating more space and a quality journalistic treatment to issues related to the protection of the environment.

In addition, this recognition aims to highlight and reward the work of journalists in print, digital and television, whose work contributes to raise awareness and raise awareness about the importance of environmental protection.

With the support of the USAID Program for Environmental Protection, the Environment Ministry delivered the National Award for Environmental Journalism in its first version to the winning journalists.
