Nodular thyroid disease affects mostly women


SANTO DOMINGO. In the Dominican Republic of consist of more prone that hombres to suffer Thyroid Nodular Disease, with up to one 96% of cases, and in them the probability that they will appear nodules se increase from the 40 and 50 years of age, according to a study prepared by Medicine students of the Instituto Tecnológico de Santo Domingo (INTEC).

Research results "Frequency of Thyroid Nodular Disease in patients attending the Endocrinology services of a hospital in Santo Domingo", which analyzed the sonography and medical records of a total of 206 patients diagnosed with this condition between February and April of last year, indicate that the possibility of the appearance of nodules is significantly reduced after the age of 60.

Of the medical files analyzed, 197 (96%) of the thyroid nodules were found in women, while only nine (4%) were identified in men.

The students of Medicine Laura Pardilla, Andreina Guzman, Laura Jovine y Laura Santana presented the study during 74 BIO-INTEC Student Health Research Conference, which is organized every trimester with the aim that students present the results of scientific research of social impact in the areas of cardiology, general surgery, endocrinology, gynecology and obstetrics, neurology, hematology, nephrology, nutrition, ophthalmology, otorhinolaryngology, orthopedics , psychology and pediatrics.

Research is a transversal practice in all the programs of the University's Health Sciences Area, which also includes the recently opened career of Dentistry, at the undergraduate level, and specialties in eight areas of ophthalmology, masters in Bioethics, Clinical Nutriology, and Obesology and Dietetics, among others, for the postgraduate level.

The thyroid is one of the most important glands of the endocrine system, and is responsible for regulating the body's metabolism. When the gland has nodules, Thyroid Nodular Disease is diagnosed.

The Thyroid nodules, as it is also known, is a frequent reason for consultation medical of endocrinology in the country and it is estimated that it affects between 4 and 7% of the population. Because there is a high level of ignorance of the frequency of the disease, this pathology often goes unnoticed and is not effectively treated.

Regarding the types of cysts found, the investigation concluded that the most frequent are the simple type, representing 53.4%, equivalent to 110 cases; colloids present a frequency of 16.99%, equivalent to 35 cases, while hemorrhagic cysts occupy 14.08%, equivalent to 29 cases. Follicular adenomas are found in 22 cases, with 10.68% and lymphomas have the third lowest percentage, with 2.43% and only 5 observed cases. This is followed by acute thyroiditis, present in three cases with 1.46%. Of the same group, subacute thyroiditis has 0.49% as follicular carcinoma, each with a single case.
