Elsa Alcántara, new Dean of Social Sciences and Humanities


SANTO DOMINGO.- The Rectory of the Instituto Tecnológico de Santo Domingo (INTEC) announced the selection of Professor Elsa Alcántara Zapata as the new dean of the Area of ​​Social Sciences and Humanities for a period of three years, from August of 2015 to August of 2018.

Professor Alcántara, who relies on Dean Migdalia Martínez, is a graduate of the Gender and Development Master's Program at INTEC and has a degree in sociology from the National University Pedro Henríquez Ureña (UNPHU).

The selection is made in compliance with the provisions of the Institution's Statutes, which in Article 33 grant the Rector the power to appoint the deans, after a prior consultation process that, according to the corresponding Regulations, includes the presentation of a ternal by the Area Assembly.

On this occasion, the selection process included the realization of two panels in which the candidates shared with the academic community their visions about the area, and the initiatives that they will try to promote during their term of office if they are chosen.

In the consultation process, Professor Alcántara indicated that she will focus her efforts on expanding the undergraduate and postgraduate offerings, combining the face-to-face and virtual modality; maintain and broaden the link with sectors and institutions in the social and humanistic field and link situations of the conjuncture to sectorial and inter-institutional analysis events that contribute to society. Likewise, he said that he will pursue the expansion of spaces for teacher updating, especially in the use of ICTs and their application to the teaching of social sciences, among other management priorities for the period 2015-2018. 

The Social Sciences and Humanities Area reports to the Academic Vice-rector; its holder is a member of the Academic Council and of the university strategic management team. Its main degree program is Psychology, to which is added the Bachelor of Humanities and Philosophy, which has traditionally been offered through the Pedro Francisco Bonó Philosophical Institute.

In the Graduate area he develops specialties, master's degrees and a doctorate in Education. Promotes scientific research, local and international linkage, knowledge transfer and contributions to Dominican society through the centers attached to the area, which maintain projects of great social impact, which are a reference in gender issues, governance, politics and social research.

Social science and humanities subjects for the different curricular programs of Engineering, Health, and Business in the propaedeutic and training cycles also depend on the area. 

The designation of a Dean is for a defined period of three years, extendable for two consecutive periods depending on the results of its management.

Professional experience

Professor Elsa Alcántara is a professor in the Social Sciences Department of INTEC, in different modalities as a teacher by subject and with full dedication, both in undergraduate and graduate, from 1990. She also works at 2009 as a project evaluator and other social research activities. She has participated in various social research teams in specific tasks and as a coordinator, with the Social Research Team, Equis-INTEC, with the Center for Educational Studies and with the Center for Gender Studies.

In the development sector, she has served as program, project manager and project officer in various national and international cooperation NGOs. As a consultant and researcher, she has published reports, including a Guide to the Universities of Santo Domingo (Fundación Frederick Ebert, 1988) and the study Gender equity in the application of Public Function Law No. 41-08 ( Citizen Participation, 2013).
