Differentiated gender: A social inequality throughout history

The students of the Bachelor's degrees in Education Instituto Tecnológico de Santo Domingo (INTEC) participated in an introductory workshop on Gender Analysis, organized by the Coordination Team of Bachelor of Science, with a Secondary Education Orientation, in coordination with the Center for Gender Studies (CEG-INTEC).

The activity was aimed at the group of teachers in the process of training in Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Biology and Social Sciences, and has been carried out in several installments between September 2017 and last March.

The objective of gender studies is to offer a critical analysis of the ways in which social inequality between men and women has been constructed throughout history. The program developed for the workshop emphasizes the construction of social inequality based on gender, proposing as learning objectives: distinguish the concepts sex and gender, identifying characteristics socially assigned to men and women, and analyzing the historical, social and social support. cultural of these characteristics; define the socialization process as a tool for the reproduction of gender inequality and identify the role of power in the sex-gender system and its manifestations.

In the contents of the workshop, when analyzing the establishment and maintenance of gender inequality, its basic conceptual elements were addressed, such as, on the one hand, the social construction of gender, the sex-gender conditioning system, patriarchy and androcentrism , and on the other hand, early and adult socialization, and the multiplying function of the school system and other social institutions that mark the segregation of genders, conditions and states of being.

In presenting its findings, used as sources in the workshop, CEG-INTEC ensures that gender analysis constitutes one of the main instrumental contributions of gender theory to scientific endeavors, political endeavors and development practice and that, consequently, the development of conceptual and instrumental capacities associated with gender analysis is essential for the comprehensive training of specialists committed to social transformations, as is the case of the group of students in the Career-Oriented Education. Secondary Education.

The workshop highlights that there are many gaps in the understanding of gender issues, and helps fill some with this introduction of basic concepts and with establishing a critical look at gender inequality.

In the final activity to close the event, the challenge in the country of assuming gender equality as a transversal axis within education was reflected, as declared by the National Development Strategy, an area in which important related weaknesses have been evidenced, on all with the training of teachers and managers to address the structural causes of gender inequality and the multiple social discrimination suffered by adult women, adolescents and girls.

 The workshop was taught by Desiree del Rosario, Mariela Jáquez Arias and Khalil Pineda. Professor Del Rosario is, in addition to being an educator, a renowned jurist, specializing in gender issues. She is also a teacher in the Area of ​​Social Sciences and Humanities at INTEC, coordinator of the Master's Degree in Gender and Equality Policies in Education; She is an advisor to the Gender Commission of the Chamber of Deputies and actively participates in spaces of national and international articulation such as the Feminist Forum and CLADEM. Professor Del Rosario is the author of several publications, a researcher for the CEG and producer of the Miradas Desencadenantes radio show on Radio INTEC.

Professor Jáquez has a degree in Marketing; A feminist activist, she has a master's degree in Gender and Development and a recognized experience of working with community groups, women and institutions on different issues related to gender. She is currently in charge of Training and Extension of the Center for Gender Studies of INTEC, and part of the teaching team of the CEG courses and diploma programs. While Khalil Pineda is a philosopher, with studies in politics and international law, he is currently an intern at the CEG-INTEC, involved in deepening and researching the issues of masculinities.
