INTEC PhD student and professors publish article in prestigious American scientific journal


Journal of Racial and Ethnic Health Disparities reports on academic progress in efforts to understand, address, and ultimately eliminate health disparities based on race and ethnicity.

SANTO DOMINGO. - Sheila Báez, student of PhD in Social Sciences and teacher of the Instituto Tecnológico de Santo Domingo (INTEC), achieved an important academic milestone with the publication of its article entitled "Social determinants of health of racialized male sex workers. Scoping literature review" in the prestigious American scientific journal Journal of Racial and Ethnic Health Disparities.

As co-authors of this article, she is accompanied by Pedro Castellanos, coordinator of the Health Sciences Research Unit, and Santiago Gallur, Doctoral Thesis advisor by Sheila Báez, who is the coordinator of the PhD in Social Sciences and the PhD in Communication and Education in Virtual Environments of INTEC.

This publication belongs to the JCR (Journal Citation Reports) index, as well as to the Web Of Science, and is recognized as one of the best in the world in the area of ​​public health from the perspective of social sciences, with a Q2 quartile.    

In her article, Báez conducts an in-depth literature review mapping the existing scientific literature on the health needs of racialized men who engage in sex work, framed within the model of the Social Determinants of Health. This scientific literature review is part of her Doctoral Thesis, which is specifically situated in the tourism context of Boca Chica, Dominican Republic.

This research addresses a complex and understudied topic, highlighting the impact of racial and sexual stereotypes in the perpetuation of racist attitudes and behaviors that objectify and dehumanize these men. 

Báez's research seeks to open the debate on the role of structural racism in shaping health inequalities and perpetuating discriminatory social dynamics. This article is Dr. Báez's first in a JCR indexed journal, after having previously published two research papers in Latindex journals.

El Journal of Racial and Ethnic Health Disparities It is edited by the prominent American physician and engineer Cato T. Laurencin, a global reference in his discipline with more than 71 thousand citations to his work and an H index of 127. This scientific endorsement highlights the rigor and potential impact of Báez's work, which is now added to the prestigious repertoire of research published in this journal. 

The journal is published by Springer and is classified as Q1 in the areas of Anthology, Sociology and Political Science, Health Policy and Public Health, Environment and Occupational Health. Recognized for its high quality, the journal seeks to promote research that addresses racial and ethnic inequalities in health, contributing to a greater understanding of the social and structural determinants that affect the health of diverse communities. 

About Sheila Baez

Sheila Báez is a doctor, teacher, sexologist and gender teacher. As a professor at INTEC, she has stood out for her commitment to research and teaching, addressing issues of public health, gender and social inequalities. Currently, she is in the final stage of her PhD in Social Sciences at INTEC, where she has developed research that seeks to positively impact Dominican society, while positioning herself as an international reference.
