Professor Manuel Colomé assumes as associate editor of a prestigious scientific journal

SANTO DOMINGO- The teacher of the Master of Public Health and Epidemiology of the Instituto Tecnológico de Santo Domingo (INTEC), Manuel Colome, was appointed associate editor for the prestigious international journal Human Vaccines & Immunotherapeutics, which receives more than 2 million views and downloads annually in digital format.

Human Vaccines and Immunotherapeutics is a journal indexed to the Journal Citation Reports (JCR for its acronym in English) that achieved an impact factor of 4.526 in 2021, positioning itself among the first places in the world. It is the only international peer-reviewed journal that focuses on human vaccines and immunotherapeutics.

Dr. Colomé began as peer reviewer in 2019, a specialist scientist on the subject who is dedicated to reviewing scientific manuscripts to guarantee their quality before their publication in scientific journals, better known by the Anglo-Saxon term "Journal".

"After having participated as a peer reviewer of several scientific articles, for having a high performance, quality and professionalism in the evaluations, Dr. Ronald Ellis, editor-in-chief, made me the proposal to accept a nomination as associate editor", reported the Dr. Colome.

He assured that his career as a researcher and his training in Epidemiology and Biostatistics, as well as the training opportunities and the support he received from INTEC, were determining factors in receiving the distinction.

The specialist explained that vaccines are his main line of research and that the papers published in the journal allowed him to delve into the existing gaps in this area in the country's Public Health system, as well as alternatives to build solutions.

He affirmed that INTEC is collaborating with the doctor Jose Brea Castillo, President of the Dominican Vaccinology Society, in the elaboration of projects that allow promoting the investigation of new vaccines and the generation of evidence to improve the immunization program in the country. “Our interest has always been that vaccination be accepted as a human right so that no one is left behind,” he said.

The epidemiologist doctor emphasized the need to promote good science that is generated from the research of health professionals. “The world needs more science communicators, especially in these times of infodemic, where false health news is fueling mistrust in vaccines," he said when referring to the subject.

Dr. Manuel Colomé has master's degrees in Research in Health Sciences; en Microbiology and Infectious Diseases and in Bioethics. It is also epidemiology manager of the Pediatric Hospital Dr. Hugo Mendoza. He has been a consultant to Interamerican Development Bank, World BankPan American Health Organization, Ministry of Public Health, among other organizations.

“This is a very important achievement in the career of any researcher, since when people from other countries know you for your work and for what you publish, it is an indicator that you are doing things well”, acknowledged the doctor.
