INTEC professor joins as international researcher in project on Artificial Intelligence in Spain
Santiago Gallur, PhD coordinator at INTEC, is part of Novos Medios, a research group at the University of Santiago de Compostela, Spain, specialized in the study of digital media and its evolution.
SANTO DOMINGO. - The doctor Santiago Gallur Santorum, teacher of Area of Social Sciences and Humanities of the Instituto Tecnológico de Santo Domingo (INTEC), is an international researcher in the project "Artificial intelligence in digital media in Spain: effects and roles", developed by the Novos Medios research group at the University of Santiago de Compostela, Spain.
New Media is a research group at the University of Santiago de Compostela, Spain, specializing in the study of digital media and its evolution. Its work focuses on the analysis of technological trends and their impact on communication, society and education.
Dr. Gallur, who is the coordinator of the doctorates of Education and Communication in Virtual Environments y social Sciences, highlighted the importance of this study in the era of post-truth media, where differentiating what is true from what is false is increasingly difficult.
“In the current context, the study and analysis of AI in different areas is essential. The media is one of the most relevant due to issues such as "fake news", "clickbait", "hoaxes", etc. It is becoming increasingly difficult to distinguish what is true from what is not in the era of media "post-truth", Gallur said in his speech.
His inclusion in this project responds to the researchers' interest in having an expert from outside Spain, which brings an international perspective to the study. "I am representing INTEC, explaining its key role in global research on artificial intelligence," said Gallur.
The research seeks to understand the effects of AI on the generation and dissemination of digital content, in a context where fake news (fake news), sensationalism (clickbait) and misinformation represent growing challenges.
Research on Artificial Intelligence at INTEC
INTEC is already exploring the impact of artificial intelligence in different areas. Currently, the doctoral student Manuel Montero, under the advice of the Dr. Maria Montas, is developing a thesis in the Doctorate in Communication and Education in Virtual Environments on the Using ChatGPT as a Mediator in Higher Education, analyzing the digital skills of teachers and students in the Dominican Republic.
Likewise, in the Diploma of Publication of Scientific Articles in Impact Journals of the Ibero-American Context, taught at INTEC in 2024, the Dr. Rita Perez He conducted a research on The role of ethics in the use of artificial intelligence in higher education.
“The topic of artificial intelligence is so relevant that we are sure that in the next rounds of both doctoral programs in the area of Social Sciences and Humanities it will be addressed from innovative perspectives,” said Gallur.
At a time when various international organizations are debating the regulation of artificial intelligence, Dr. Gallur emphasized that this type of research allows us to advance in the understanding of its impact not only in the legal and political sphere, but also in the academic and scientific sphere.
“The challenge now is to determine how, when and in what way AI should be used in education, communication and scientific production. Artificial intelligence is here to stay and it is up to us as researchers to define its best application,” he concluded.
