INTEC teacher publishes article in Nature Sustainability magazine
SANTO DOMINGO. The research professor of the Instituto Tecnológico de Santo Domingo (INTEC), Ulises Jauregui Haza, published an article in the prestigious academic journal Nature Sustainability as part of a collaborative work with researchers from 21 countries, who analyzed novel alternatives for water management in Latin America.
The article, titled “Accelerating innovative water treatment in Latin America”, concludes that portable, mobile, flexible systems for water treatment with electrochemical applications are a novel and viable alternative to ensure the supply of drinking water in isolated communities with limited access to resources. These units are characterized by ease of installation and use in remote communities.
Jáuregui explained that the contamination of water with persistent organic compounds, product of the use of pesticides, drugs and others, are not eliminated through conventional treatment systems, "so new technologies must be identified to degrade these new forms of contamination". Jáuregui Haza maintained.
Jáuregui Haza was contacted to join the group on behalf of the Dominican Republic, since the expert has published other scientific articles on water treatment by advanced oxidation processes. Several on the use of ultraviolet radiation, gamma radiation and ultrasound in water treatment and also electrochemical applications. The researcher is also the coordinator of the Interdisciplinary Research Group on the subject of Sargassum of INTEC.
"I'm very happy. This is the article that has the most impact of all the ones I have published... For me, the most important thing is the recognition of the good analysis that the group made on a subject that is vital to achieve the objectives for sustainable development ", he expressed when referring to to the publication of one of his works in Nature Sustainability, a magazine with a high impact factor that specializes in innovation articles on engineering, nature, society and sustainability.
