Director of Customs assures Logistics Hub is a reality in the Dominican Republic


SANTO DOMINGO. - With the conference: "Dominican Republic: Hub Logistics of the region Eduardo Sanz Lovaton, CEO Customs, spoke, before students and teachers of the Instituto Tecnológico de Santo Domingo, (INTEC), the achievement that the country has had in becoming the Hub most important logistic company in the region.

What has been reflected, in the generation of more jobs, the search for new ways of development, not only tourism, but also in Free Trade Zones and remittances.

Lovatón also explained about the contribution that Customs is making so that it continues to be Hub Logistics, among the contributions are: the Dispatch in 24 hours (D24H), more than 50,000 containers dispatched to date, the new Customs Law 168-21, strengthening of the regulatory framework, MOR Risk engine, increase in collections of more than 1,000 million, month by month, new technologies for non-intrusive reviews (X-Rays), integration of new technological systems, Simplified OEA implementation of which we are the leaders of the Caribbean and second place in all of Latin America and fourth in the entire continent.

Likewise, productive chains, free zones, local industry, internal market, re-exports, Freight and logistics disruption as an opportunity for the development of the Hub. Because of this, companies are actively seeking how to improve their logistics and keep their inventories close, advantages of nearshoring to have inventory close to destination markets.

The director of Customs assured that the Dominican Republic is one of the most competitive countries in the region based on: lower logistics costs and greater logistics efficiency. At the same time, we have the capacity and infrastructure to handle larger volumes of air, sea, and land cargo. 

Current trends show that it is more economical and efficient to distribute from the Dominican Republic to the United States, by air, than to distribute by land within the United States.

A 10% decrease in transportation costs could increase exports by 30%, doubling port efficiency has an effect, on costs, similar to reducing the distance between two points.

"We have to believe in us, you have to believe in the dream you have, if you believe you can achieve something, the first one who has to believe it is you," exhorted the director of Customs in his final message to the students of the institute.

While alliet ortega, Vice-rector for Administration and Finance of INTECIn the words of welcome, he thanked the director for talking with the students, "Today, INTEC tells you that you can count on us for the development of capacities to be a world reference such as the hub logistics that its management is working from the General Directorate of Customs”.

Sanz Lovatón assured that the Dominican Republic represents the best multimodal offer in Latin America and the best interconnection between the logistics nodes of the same region.

In the presentation, he also shared the progress of the Segment Study Hub logistics, carried out by the General Directorate of Customs (DGA) together with the American Chamber of Commerce of the Dominican Republic (AMCHAMDR), which will reveal the competitive conditions of the country and the environment, the niche markets to attack.

2021 was the year with the highest volume of cargo in transit handled by the country, more than 771 thousand TEUS, likewise, the year with the highest volume of air cargo handled by the country, more than 1,160 tons with the capacity to grow much more, due to to the number of empty bellies still available, greater and better connectivity of transits via the Dominican Republic.
