Inequalities by gender are constant until old age
SANTO DOMINGO. Inequalities between Dominican men and women are evident throughout their lives in a series of social predispositions ranging from what kind of games can each one practice? What places of fun can they frequent? and at what age should they be married and with children?
The reflections are part of the findings of the investigation “Gender Imaginaries in Dominican Youths” by Jeannette Tineo, which were collected in a book. A large group of students from different careers had the opportunity to hear about the research directly from its author and ask their questions and comments.
The study, which is a collaboration between the Center for Gender Studies of INTEC, OXFAM and Provincial Council of Bizkaia, Spain, has among its main conclusions: The "feminine" and "masculine" behaviors are validation mechanisms against adults; gender norms are installed from childhood, while children are required to have strength and domination of the public, girls are called to remain private.
In addition, being a woman for young women continues to be anchored in the principles of motherhood and family, while for young people the fundamental value of their masculinity is their ability to have things and to provide.
Tineo warns that the perpetuation of these dynamics among young people is translated into multiple situations of harassment, violence and abuse, in different areas of daily life. In his opinion, young people do not have references to think differently and practice different social relationships.
