CSEE International Congress selects INTEC researcher article as "Best Paper"

SANTO DOMINGO. The research professor of Instituto Tecnológico de Santo Domingo (INTEC), Claudia Germosoreceived the recognitionbest paper" For his job “A 2D non-linear soil response, based on the influence of the vertical component in near-fault conditions”, during his participation in the eighth World Congress on Civil, Structural and Environmental Engineering (CSEE).

The research work addresses the acceleration variations of an earthquake in a seismic site in a bidirectional way, with the aim of better predicting the arrival of a natural disaster of this type.

The fundamental objective of the research is that we are “able to calculate very fast solutions for nonlinear soil dynamics and to examine the dynamic response of different configurations of stratified surfaces, considering nonlinear characteristics, to evaluate the role of the vertical component of soil”. seismic movement”, explains the abstract of the essay.

In the article, Germoso and his colleagues propose a numerical simulation based on a two-dimensional parametric analysis of the soil response, in order to analyze the influence of vertical acceleration in near-fault conditions. Material and geometric parameters related to Young's modulus, damping ratio and soil column thickness are considered within a parametric approach that allows us to assess various subsoil conditions.

In the development of the investigation that resulted in this paper, Germoso was accompanied by researchers Luis Placeres from the Pontificia Universidad Católica Madre y Maestra (PUCMM), and by Armando Simonelli, Augusto Penna and Diletta Aliperti, from the University of Sannio, Italy.

The CSEE, held in Lisbon, Portugal, is one of the most important civil, structural and environmental engineering congresses in the world, which each year welcomes dozens of researchers, universities, companies and research institutions that present the results of their research or who attend interested in learning about the latest developments in these sectors.

"Being selected by the committee of experts with said recognition in this event is a great achievement and tribute to the quality of the research work that I have been carrying out together with my colleagues," said the INTEC professor when referring to the recognition.

The presentation of paper was part of the scientific dissemination activities of the research project "Probabilistic study of seismic hazard in public buildings in the Dominican Republic based on a non-linear analysis of the soil", financed by the National Fund for Innovation and Scientific and Technological Development "(FONDOCYT) ), and directed by the Ministry of Higher Education, Science and Technology (MESCYT).

Claudia Germoso is a doctor in Earthquake Engineering and a research professor at INTEC since 2016. During this time, she has presented four proposals in the FONDOCYT calls and all four have been approved.
