CMD exalts the Regent of INTEC as Master of Medicine


The Dominican Medical Association (CMD) praised Doctors Jorge Marte Báez, Severo Antonio Mercedes Acosta and Luis Rivera as Doctors of Medicine of the Dominican Republic, in recognition of their significant contributions to public health policies, as well as to their practice professional, nuanced by its ethical and human sense.

Marte Báez, pulmonologist and sleep specialist, is one of the 15 members of the Board of Regents of the Instituto Tecnológico de Santo Domingo (INTEC), since August of 2013 and received the award in a ceremony that took place at the end of August in the Juan Bosch auditorium of the Pedro Henríquez Ureña National Library.

Master of Dominican Medicine is an exaltation given by the Dominican Medical Association (CMD) to a meritorious work of a whole career, based on ethical and humanistic principles, which also recognizes those who have known how to combine exercise with teaching. Recently the National Board of the CMD designated the permanent use of the initial MMD, to refer to this title as a figure of meritorious accreditation to those who have been recognized as such.

The vice-president of the Republic, Dr. Margarita Cedeño de Fernández, participated in the meeting; the Minister of Public Health, Dr. Freddy Hidalgo Núñez; the Minister of Labor, Lic. Maritza Hernández; Dr. Pedro Sing, president of the CMD; the General Secretary, Dr. Concepción Aurora Sierra, who occupied the table of honor. In addition, for the honorees, relatives, friends, doctors of different specialties, personalities from various areas of society, including Manuel A. Grullón, the rector of the Autonomous University of Santo Domingo (UASD), Dr. Iván Grullón; businessman José Luis Corripio (Pepín); the director of the National Library Pedro Henríquez Ureña, Lic. Diómedes Núñez Polanco, among others.

The ceremony was led by the president of the CMD, Dr. Pedro Sing, who said that the mission to train and contribute to the development of science, should be recognized and highlighted with the highest distinction. "That is why the Dominican Medical Association, as part of its anniversary week, praises its members as Masters of Medicine, who have made important contributions in the field of teaching and research," he said.

A life consecrated to Medicine

Marte Báez is a Pneumologist, Internist, Intensivist and Sleep Specialist Grupo MedicalNet, currently directs the MedicalNet Sleep Clinic (Grupo Neumosueño) and is a specialist on the staff of the Abreu Clinic and Head of the Department of Pneumology and Sleep Disorders, of the United Hearts Clinic.

Doctor of Medicine of the INTEC, with Specialty in Internal Medicine at the Hospital Salvador B. Gautier, Marte Báez was trained as a Specialist in Critical Medicine and Intensive Care of the Hermanos Ameijeiras Hospital, Havana (Cuba), among others.

He was Head of the Department of Internal Medicine, Salvador B. Gautier Hospital, from 2002-2009, Director-Founder of the First Sleep Laboratory in the country (1998-2013) Clínica Corazones Unidos. He was also Director of the O&M University / Harvard Medical International Project School of Medicine from 2006-2012.

In a different ceremony, the CMD and the Council of Specialized Medical Societies recognized 27 health professionals, for their career and contributions made from different areas of the medical specialty in the country. 

Among those recognized is Dr. Jimmy Barranco, specialist in Clinical Nutriology and coordinator of the specialty in Clinical Nutriology. In addition, doctors Fernando Sánchez Martínez, of the Dominican Psychiatric Society; Raúl Sánchez Jiménez, of the Sonography Society; Nelson Mañón, of Hematology, among many others. 

The ceremony was held in the CMD Past Presidents room, which was packed by a large number of doctors, who applauded each delivery made by doctors Pedro Sing, president of the CMD, and Santos Ramírez, president of the Specialized Medical Societies.
