Center for Environmental Management Studies of INTEC delivers Carbon Footprint experts to the country

SANTO DOMINGO. - The Center for Environmental Management Studies of the Instituto Tecnológico de Santo Domingo (CEGA-INTEC) certified the first graduates of the Carbon Footprint course, which was taught with the objective of professional training, according to existing protocols, on the calculation of the Carbon Footprint.

Diana Corrales, coordinator of CEGA INTEC, explained that the activity responds to the purpose of offering spaces for training in institutional, business and individual strengthening in environmental matters. “This allows us to be more critical towards current production systems, which is why this methodology is one of the tools that allows us to identify opportunities for improvement to be more competitive every day and move towards more sustainable and environmentally responsible practices,” she added.

Doctors Ulises Jáuregui, full professor at INTEC and coordinator of the course, and Elena Rosa Domínguez, professor at the Central University of Las Villas, Cuba, were present during the certificate presentation ceremony, responsible for sharing their knowledge in measuring the carbon footprint. The researchers valued the support of CEGA INTEC during the training process and highlighted the performance of the first graduates of the course.

Jáuregui, who also coordinates the Interdisciplinary Research Group on the Sargassum issue of INTEC, explained that the commitment to this first group is based on responding to a need and decision of the Government that, starting in 2024, a group of Government organizations are going to have to present their carbon footprint calculation as a work tool.

“Calculating a carbon footprint is not having a figure, but rather having a directive that allows us to organize the activity of companies, institutions and organizations to reduce carbon emissions into the environment and help the population around us with this. ”explained Jáuregui.

The course “Carbon footprint: bases for its determination” consists of 12 hours and meets the objectives of calculating the Carbon Footprint, communicating it and drawing up mitigation strategies. The organizers announced that they will soon carry out the second edition of the course, in order to train the country's professionals for 2025, the year in which all institutions will have responsibility for their carbon footprint.
