Autonomy of women guarantees the exercise of their human rights


Santo Domingo. The Center for Gender Studies of Instituto Tecnológico de Santo Domingo (INTEC) opened the VII Dominican Conference on Gender Studies: "Building Knowledge for Equality", on November 1 and 2, at the Osvaldo García de la Concha Auditorium of INTEC.

On this occasion, the Conference focused on the issue of Women's Autonomy and its "physical, economic and decision-making" dimensions, both in private and public life, as a fundamental element to guarantee the exercise of their human rights.

Placing autonomy as the central concept of this analysis, according to the coordinator of the Conference Dr. Desiree Del Rosario Sosa, has the purpose of showing that the demand for equal recognition of men and women, which arose within the female vindication for equal rights in the framework of the century of lights, has been latent in all the scenarios in which women have demanded the recognition of a real equality. The table of honor was composed by Dr. Julio Sánchez Maríñez, Vice-Rector of Research and Liaison of INTEC; the teacher Lourdes Contreras, director of the Center for Gender Studies at INTEC; Alejandrina Germán, Minister of Women; Dr. Desiree del Rosario Sosa, coordinator of the Conference; Ms. Miosotis Rivas, Technical Secretary of the Council of Ministers of Central America and the Dominican Republic (COMMCA / SICA); and Dr. Manuel Cabral, Director of Corporate Affairs at Philip Morris Dominicana.

Dr. Sánchez Maríñez opened the activity, followed by teacher Lourdes Contreras, who spoke a few words about the meaning of this meeting in terms of gender. The Minister for Women, Alejandrina Germán, concluded the formal ceremony.

The event has the participation of three guests from the Central American Region: Mabelle Figueroa, from Costa Rica, who spoke at the inaugural conference on the theme "Women's Autonomy from the State: Progress, Obstacles and Challenges Facing the 2015 Goal"; Isabel Torres, from Nicaragua, spoke on “The change in politics: the emergence of women and female citizenship in Central America and the Dominican Republic”; and Urania Ungo, from Panama, with the topic of physical autonomy "Between moral conservatism and the autonomic demands of women", considered one of the most important issues, as the Dominican Republic is one of the countries with the highest rates of femicides and violence. in Latin America and where sexual and reproductive rights are denied.

17 papers will be presented, of which three address economic autonomy, four political autonomy, and ten on physical autonomy. Of these presentations, seven will correspond to research carried out by participants of the Master's program in Gender and Development carried out by the Center for Gender Studies of INTEC. The presentations of the topics were framed in panels and work tables.

The Dominican Conference on Gender Studies is a space for academic debate that gathers every two years members of the scientific and artistic communities and of different social movements to present research that makes relevant contributions to gender studies in the Dominican Republic.

It was established in 2003 by the Center for Gender Studies, to include the dissemination of research work carried out by the students of the Master of Gender and Development, promoting the dissemination of knowledge about equality; hence its motto "Building Knowledge for Equality".
