Analyze normative aspects of therapeutic abortion
SANTO DOMINGO. Health professionals and women's organizations analyzed the normative aspects of therapeutic abortion in the context of the Law 550-14 that establishes the new Penal Code, during the forum "Regulatory aspects of therapeutic abortion", organized by the Center for Gender Studies Instituto Tecnológico de Santo Domingo (CEG-INTEC) in coordination with the Dominican Medical College (CMD).
In this event, the president of the CMD, Pedro Sing, spoke about the importance of the protocol to address cases of abortion, while Rocío Caridad, president of the Dominican Society of Obstetrics and Gynecology, announced the procedures applied in cases of interruption of pregnancy that occur in the health centers of the country.
Dr. Miladys Román analyzed the protocols that govern therapeutic abortion in Latin America and the Caribbean, in this forum coordinated with the Areas of Social Sciences and Humanities and Health Sciences of INTEC.
During the opening of the meeting, the coordinator of CEG-INTEC Lourdes Contreras valued the importance of dialogue between the interests of women in the exercise of their sexual and reproductive rights, and the responsibilities of the health sector.
Contreras said that the debate on the rule of therapeutic abortion is timely, because the law was enacted last December and for its implementation the country should be given a protocol to guide the medical practice. He advocated that the process of formulating these instruments be as participatory as possible.
The new Penal Code establishes that "the interruption of pregnancy practiced by medical personnel specialized in health facilities, public or private if all available scientific and technical means to save the two lives are exhausted, as far as possible" is not punishable.
The forum on "Normative aspects of therapeutic abortion" is part of the actions of the Project Voices for Women's Rights that run PROFAMILIA and the CEG-INTEC, with the support of the European Union.
