They update on the latest technologies and good Simulation practices in the Health Area at Mini Sun

SANTO DOMINGO.- The Dominican Society of Clinical Simulation (SODOSICLI), through the Simulation User Network, performed in the Instituto Tecnológico de Santo Domingo (INTEC) Mini Sun 2023, an activity that seeks to promote medical simulation practices in a learning and collaboration space for both students and teachers in the health field nationwide.

During the event, 64 health professionals participated, including teachers, doctors, dentists and nurses representing the Clinical Simulation laboratories of the Ibero-American University (UNIBE); the Pontifical Catholic Mother and Teacher University (PUCMM); the Technological University of Santiago (UTESA); the Eugenio María de Hostos University (UNIREMOS) and the Autonomous University of Santo Domingo (UASD), among others. These were exposed to the International Standards of Education through Health Simulation and had the opportunity to develop the practical part in the INTEC laboratories together with experts on the subject, in order to acquire skills and competencies in health teaching with simulation. .

Pablo Smester, president of SODOSICLI, thanked INTEC for hosting the event and considered the simulation as a milestone for the academic field, in the Health Area. “Simulation has come to break paradigms in Health teaching. It is based a lot on transparency, on the student knowing what we are going to do, how I am going to evaluate it and in what way I am going to evaluate it; “That breaks teaching paradigms because in the country and in Latin America we tend to teach without being transparent or ethical with students and, at times, the exam is a surprise,” commented the doctor.

The coordinator of the Simulation Laboratory and professor at INTEC announced that, in 2025, for the first time the country will host the Eighth Latin American Congress of Clinical Simulation for 2025, to be held in Punta Cana.

For its implementation, the event received support from Cámara Mundi, an educational technology provider in Puerto Rico and Laerdal, a multinational company that develops products and programs for health care providers, voluntary organizations, educational institutions and hospitals.

The talks and workshops addressed topics of impact on patient safety, reduction of medical error through simulation and the role of the simulationist. “Standards of good practices for the health simulationist of INACSL (International Nursing Association for Clinical Simulation and Learning)” was the keynote talk by Karen Vergara, Territory Manager, Southern Region of Laerdal Medical.

Subsequently, people were divided into four teams, among different practical and educational simulation talks, including: New Learning Circle, given by Victor Espinola, Caribbean Territory Manager at Laerdal Medical; Simcapture for Skills with MST by Karen Vergara; High Quality Cardiac Massage by the doctor Wayna Vasquez, founding member and current vice president of SODOSICLI; and High Fidelity Scenarios with High Realism by the doctor Scarllen Pérez, certified simulation educator and founding member of SODOSICLI.

Hiram Claudio, representative of Laerdal Medical Latam, was also present, who spoke a few words of welcome to the second Mini Sun held in the country.

“Clinical simulation is a fundamental tool in academic training and contributes significantly to the continuous improvement of medical care around the world,” was the statement with which Scarllen Pérez introduced Claudio's participation.

The event concluded with the presentation of prizes to the team with the best performance in their practices and a raffle among all participants.
