Open Calls for Journalistic Contest on Gender


Santo Domingo. Since last Monday 4 of August, the call to participate in the second version of the Annual Journalistic Contest: "Gender equality for a life without violence." Representatives of the Dominican Association of Journalists with a Gender Perspective and the Center reported of Gender Studies of Instituto Tecnológico de Santo Domingo (CEG-INTEC).

The same applies to jobs published between the 1ero. November of 2010 and the 1ero. November of 2011. Both organizers, together with Philip Morris Dominicana, will award the two best journalistic works in the categories Print / Digital and Television, awarding prizes of up to 100 thousand pesos.

This contest seeks to encourage communicators to carry out work on the impact that violence against women and intrafamily violence have on society, focusing them as a public problem, of human rights violations and based on cultural patterns that affect health , the development and citizen exercise of its victims.

The papers to be submitted must be deposited in the offices of the Center for Gender Studies of INTEC.

"There is a lack of commitment from multiple social agencies and the State to face the cases of violence that every year takes the life of 100 and 200 Dominican women," said Lourdes Contreras, coordinator of CEG-INTEC, during the announcement of the opening of the call for the contest.

Contreras also explained that the dimensions and magnitude of the different manifestations of violence that are known daily, ranging from mistreatment and sexual violations to femicides, as well as a variety of expressions that characterize the behaviors that are based on the inequality of power .

Carlos Ferdinand, Director of Corporate Affairs of Philip Morris Dominicana, reiterated the social commitment of his company to collaborate in the solution of this problem, "It is from there that through our program of corporate social responsibility we assume and support this effort to eradicate violence against women and intrafamily in the country, we hope that the second version of the contest will create awareness on the issue and become another column to end the cycle of violence "he stressed.

Likewise, Emilia Santos, of the Dominican Association of Journalists with a Gender Perspective, highlighted the role that the media should play in shaping public opinion and creating public awareness, in the eradication of this problem as a fundamental actor that are in the society.

Santos called on the communicators to carry out their work and present it to the jury as it seeks to reward the quality of them for their adherence to ethical standards and contributions to the defense of the rights of women and other social groups that suffer from this problem.
