Address socio-environmental implications of the mining project in Loma Miranda



Santo Domingo. El Instituto Tecnológico de Santo DomingoINTEC, held on Monday, September 17, a debate on the topic Loma Miranda: "Socio-environmental implications of mega mining in the Central Cibao". The meeting that was framed in the joint analysis program of the Area of ​​Social Sciences and Humanities, took place in the Osvaldo García de la Concha Auditorium of the university.

The debate opened a field of discussion about the relevance of the nickel exploitation in Loma Miranda, located between the Province of Monseñor Nouel and La Vega. It was moderated by José Contreras, director of the Center for Environmental Management of INTEC, and headed by Migdalia Martínez, dean of Social Sciences and Humanities of INTEC.

It was attended by representatives of the Xstrata Nickel mining company, the National Environmental Assembly, the General Directorate of Mining and the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources.

"INTEC as an academic center considers the convenience of raising the discussion and contributing to the possible solution of the socio-environmental conflict, taking into account the provisions of the General Law of Environment and Natural Resources (64-00) and its complementary regulations, as well as as to the demands of environmental organizations, civil society and the Academy of Science, among others, "the institution said in a statement.

In this sense, "INTEC tries to ensure that the debate reflects as results the opening of spaces for analysis about the mining conflict currently being experienced in Loma Miranda."

The debate on the Loma Miranda project was in charge of the panelists Domingo Abreu, of the National Environmental Assembly; Fernando Cabrera, environmental leader of Falcondo; Iván Pimentel, of New Mines and Explorations; Ramón Morrobel, from the Ministry of Mining and Eleuterio Martínez, from the Academy of Science.
