Maha Mamo will participate in the XI Dominican Conference on Gender Studies of INTEC


SANTO DOMINGO. - Maha mamo will give a keynote lecture at the XI Dominican Conference on Gender Studies: Building Knowledge for Equality, Which organizes the Center for Gender Studies of the Instituto Tecnológico de Santo Domingo and it will be celebrated on the days December 8 and 9 in the Auditorium of the Social Security of said university.

The central theme of the conference is "Human Mobility, a gender perspective on the challenges and inequalities in the new migratory contexts: Trafficking in persons, Nationality and Refuge in the DR" and its purpose is to address and characterize the phenomenon of migration at the international and national level, focused on the consideration of the gender approach, human rights and the new migration governance in the Dominican Republic.

The opening ceremony, which will take place on December 8, will begin with the keynote lecture by Maha Mamo. In addition, two panels will be held in which research on migration and violence, the problematization of Haitian women in labor, the trafficking of women in Dominican drama and humanitarian emergency and the health emergency will be presented.

Meanwhile, on December 9, the keynote address will be given by the anthropologist Tahira Vargas, and the books "The black behind the ears: Dominican racial identity, from museums to the beauty salon" by Ginetta Candelario; "Trafficking in persons" by Larry Madrigal and "Miradas Desencadenantes" by CEG-INTEC.

In addition, lines of research will address new challenges for migrant women gender, international migration and sociolinguistic barriers, psychotherapeutic intervention in migrant women and patterns of criminal prosecution of women for abortion and other obstetric events.

The annual realization of the Dominican Conference on Gender Studies seeks to develop an academic debate on the reality of gender relations in the Dominican Republic, disseminating research, studies and social interventions that make evident the expressions of discrimination based on gender in the country, revealing the disadvantageous consequences for women in the social, economic, political and cultural spheres, to help uproot the causes that generate these inequalities.
