INTEC and the National Botanical Garden renew their commitment to preserving the natural heritage and environment of the Dominican Republic
SANTO DOMINGO. The Instituto Tecnológico de Santo Domingo (INTEC) and the JDr. Rafael M. Moscoso National Botanical Garden (JBN), renewed their commitment awarded by the preservation of natural heritage and the environment of the Dominican Republic, with emphasis on the study and the for preserve endangered botanical species.
This is how the agreement subscribed by Director of INTEC, Julio Sanchez Marinez and the General Manager of JBN, Pedro Suarez, which also provides for the carrying out of research, events and other activities aimed at preserving natural resources.
“This agreement is one of the many ways in which our university fulfills its mission of contributing to the social transformation of the country, leaving an improved national legacy for future generations,” said the rector of INTEC.
Meanwhile, Suárez praised the support that the National Botanical Garden has received for years from the university and that, with this renewal, it will continue to allow technical staff to benefit from these scholarships that promote their academic training, improving their skills and opportunities.
As part of the agreement, the INTEC will award two scholarships for postgraduate, master's or specialty studies in benefit of collaborators of the National Botanical Garden, while making its laboratories, classrooms and libraries available for consultation purposes.
Likewise, the agreement provides that the National Botanical Garden will support INTEC in the floristic survey projects carried out by students of various courses, providing its technicians and training the groups in charge of the work. It also makes the National Botanical Garden's halls and spaces available to INTEC for academic and administrative purposes, as well as its specialized laboratories and herbarium, which support teaching and research work.
The institutions have a long-standing relationship of collaboration and partnership dating back to 1997, always with the aim of preserving natural heritage and the environment. Within the framework of their relationship, in April 2016, they signed an agreement to develop the study “Selection, cloning and intensive silviculture of superior genotypes of Swietenia Mahagoni Jacq. In the Dominican Republic”, an academic research on Mahogany.
