INTEC reaches its tenth granted patent

SANTO DOMINGO. -El Instituto Tecnológico de Santo Domingo (INTEC) obtained its tenth patent, for the creation of a board made from recycled bottles, which is intended for educational, artistic or advertising communication activities, allowing the creation of pixelated images within the pedagogical field, graphic communication or texts.

The university holds the largest number of patents registered locally with a total of ten granted in the Dominican Republic, one of which has also been granted in the United States, it also made history by obtaining the first national patent granted to a university, granted in in 2016 for the automatic heating catalyst in internal combustion engines. Of the total number of patents granted to INTEC, six are for utility models, one for Industrial design and three for inventions.

On this occasion, the National Office of Industrial Property (ONAPI) granted INTEC the utility model U2020-0232 for the development of the "Eco-friendly material board for education or advertising", a tile-like board embedded with 81 plastic bottle necks, including the container threads glued in an orthogonal relationship, which adhere to the wall and allow pixelization of the image.

The utility model achieves a sui generis means of learning and creativity development capable of making two- and three-dimensional visual images in a simple way for educational, therapeutic or advertising purposes, and offers a practical utility to a waste that causes negative effects by environment.

During the act, Salvador Ramos, director of ONAPI, pointed out that this patent is an important and significant work for the country, and shows that there is still talent and people with the creativity and initiative to produce new and important things that go on benefit of citizenship.

The head of ONAPI highlighted that INTEC is a cutting-edge university in the area of research and highlighted its effort to work and insert itself in the fields of research, patents and utility models.

Meanwhile, the researcher Marcelo Ferder, upon receiving the patent certificate, maintained that he has been working in the area of plastic arts applied to the city for a long time. “I was concerned about how to create a system that can transmit images and at the same time be educational through recycling, and this began in 2015 with several prototypes until it settled on the project that brings us here today, to which we have given it the title Tapixel, cover more pixels”.

The teacher of the INTEC Engineering Area said that on the board the lid is screwed with a special system that allows creating advertising, artistic images or educational panels for students to play and develop their fine motor skills, through the creation of figures. In addition, the researcher highlighted that recyclers from different areas of the city are involved in the creation process to supply the raw material.

Present at the award ceremony was Heidi Sánchez, coordinator of the INTEC Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation, through which the university submits patents. "This patent satisfactorily closes the value cycle between entrepreneurship and innovation since it was part of the INTEC Emprende pre-incubation program carried out by the Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation, which ended with its protection," said Sánchez.

Sánchez stated that "we are very pleased to start this year 2022 receiving from the hands of this important institution the concession of the Eco-friendly material board utility model for education or advertising, this patent is number 10 of the university, an important number which adds to the achievements of our community in terms of innovation”.
