INTEC researcher teacher presents results on research in electrical microgrids at a conference in Colombia


The doctor in Energy Management for Sustainable Development, Miguel Aybar, participated in the first symposium “Connections to Sustain Science in Latin America” held in Uninorte, Barranquilla

SANTO DOMINGO. - The Teaching researcher of the Instituto Tecnológico de Santo Domingo Miguel Euclides Aybar Mejía, PhD in Energy Management for Development, presented the progress of his research on the development of smart electrical microgrid controllers and co-simulation laboratories, at the symposium “Connections to Sustain Science in Latin America”, made in the Uninorte University, in Barranquilla, Colombia.

The event, which was held with the impetus of the United States National Academy of Sciences, brought together researchers from different disciplines to explore the frontiers of research in the fields of community resilience and disaster preparedness, pandemic preparedness and recovery, oceans under climate change, food security and nutrition, infrastructure transport and energy in a changing world.

The symposium was attended by a hundred researchers from Canada, the United States, Mexico, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Panama, Colombia, Venezuela, Peru, Brazil, Chile, Argentina and Uruguay.  

About the investigation

Research "Management of electrical microgrids in low voltage networks", is developed by Dr. Aybar together with his colleagues Deyslen Mariano Hernandez y Armando Taveras with financing from National Fund for Scientific and Technological Innovation and Development (FONDOCYT). The objective is to develop digital co-simulation environments in real time that shorten and reduce the research, development and innovation cycles for the control of smart electrical microgrids, promoting the integration of low-carbon technologies in the energy matrix of the Dominican Republic.

Likewise, the research seeks to implement a real-time simulation laboratory where data from the distributed generation microgrid of the INTEC campus or any other location in the country is integrated and allows scenarios to be carried out to analyze the behavior of the network with the high penetration of renewable energies. in electrical networks.​

Also develop knowledge bases on the implementation of real-time simulation for controllers of intelligent electrical microgrids interconnected in electrical networks and develop real-time management and control controllers of electrical microgrids that adapt to the conditions of the electrical networks of the Dominican Republic, allowing to reduce the management and control process of electrical microgrids.

Aybar pointed out that given the priority for developing countries to make a clean energy transition that integrates low-carbon energy technologies, there are challenges when it comes to integrating this type of technology into electrical energy systems, since many of them do not have the technological infrastructure necessary for the control and management of said technologies.

The teacher specified that the control of the microgrid maximizes dispersed generation resources, allowing the energy needs of low-voltage electrical installations to be met.

In addition, he maintained that the real simulation of the converters presents few switches, but allows controlling the elements of the microgrid so that the Generation Distribution units balance the generated and load powers.

Profile of the researcher

Miguel Aybar Mejía graduated from INTEC's electrical engineering career in 2005, and at the same university he completed a postgraduate degree in Data Telecommunications, and master's degrees in Renewable Energy and Maintenance Engineering. He has been a teacher at his alma mater since 2006 in the subjects electrical machines, electrical engineering projects, control and communications systems, he also teaches at the Polytechnic University of Puerto Rico. He became the first graduate of the Doctorate in Energy Management for Sustainable Development from INTEC, part of the offer of the first national doctorates in Sciences in the country, started in 2018.

Aybar obtained the highest qualification when presenting his doctoral thesis “Energy management system for smart microgrids, integrated into low-voltage electrical networks for the conditions of the Dominican Republic”

The doctorate in Energy Management for Sustainable Development has the objective of training highly qualified professionals in the energy-environmental area, with theoretical-practical skills and the use of advanced technological tools, to solve problems in an innovative way.
