CNE and INTEC will conduct research on renewable energy and energy efficiency
The entities committed to carry out academic training and research activities in the field of renewable energy
SANTO DOMINGO. - The National Energy Commission (CNE) and the Instituto Tecnológico de Santo Domingo (INTEC) signed an inter-institutional cooperation agreement with the aim of promoting research and technological development in energy efficiency and renewable energy in the Dominican Republic.
The agreement signed by the executive director of the CNE, Edward Veras, and the rector of INTEC, Julio Sánchez Maríñez, indicates that the entities will carry out the research “Methodology for the optimization of operational reserves in the wholesale electricity market of the Dominican Republic with high penetration of variable renewable energy.”
During his speech, Edward Veras stressed that the country must continue investing in innovation and technological development. “In the energy sector, we must partner with academies, institutes and universities so that they can lead the research processes and help us develop the ideas we need to advance in technological matters,” he said.
Sánchez Maríñez also highlighted INTEC's presence in addressing national issues related to the electrical sector, and emphasized the forum on energy transition in which the topic was discussed with various actors in the sector. During the signing ceremony, held in the Social Security Auditorium of that university, the rector valued the importance of the triple helix: academia, government and business to obtain more robust results in terms of applied science.
The execution of the research project will be financed by the National Fund for Innovation and Scientific and Technological Development (FONDOCYT), in addition the CNE will contribute RD$1,615,000.00 and INTEC will contribute another RD$1,000,000.00 of its own research funds.
The research will be developed by Dr. Máximo Alberto Domínguez Garabito of INTEC, as principal investigator, and Rafael Orlando Uceta Acosta, Coordinator of Studies and Management of the Expansion of Electric Generation and Yeulis Vidal Rivas Peña, advisor, as co-investigators, representing the CNE.
Framework agreement for cooperation
Additionally, INTEC and CNE signed a framework cooperation agreement that includes the development of scientific research activities, training programs and joint publications; support for the university's PhD in Energy Management for Sustainable Development; seminars, courses, workshops and academic and scientific activities; exchange of academic, scientific and technical information; scholarship programs and internships or professional practices for INTEC students.
The signing ceremony was attended by INTEC's Vice-Chancellor for Research and Liaison, Rosario Aróstegui; the Director of Research, Carlos Sanlley; the research professor of the Engineering Department, Miguel Aybar, as well as a representation of Electrical Engineering students, as well as other directors of the academy. The CNE was represented by Orlando Fernández, manager of Legal Consulting; Ana Núñez, head of the Contracts Division; Jafys Tejada, manager of International Relations; Yeulis Rivas, advisor to the CNE; and Viancamely Alcántara, manager of Public Relations.
This joint effort reaffirms the commitment of both institutions to sustainable development and the training of future professionals who will lead the evolution of the electrical sector in the Dominican Republic.
