INTEC teachers and students participate in an international conference on Smart Cities
SANTO DOMINGO. - The professors of the Engineering Area of the Instituto Tecnológico de Santo Domingo, Miguel Aybar, Deyslen Mariano, René Báez and Eduardo de León, and the Electrical Engineering students, Alejandro Arias, Alexis Castillo, David Lavandier and Edwin Cadet, presented the research “Design of an Interconnected Microgrid for the Electrification of San Pablo II Community : Case of Study Dominican Republic ”during the international conference of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers of the United States (IEEE).
In the activity, which was developed virtually, the INTEC team presented the aforementioned degree project in which it was shown how the application of smart micro grids are important elements for the development of smart cities and what would be the benefits community.
The research establishes how the energy not served in the community can be reduced, how the use of microgrids impacts the reduction of carbon dioxide (CO2) and other gases that result from the generation of electricity. In addition, it establishes that the microgrid can improve the resilience of the community during power outages and natural disasters, since the Dominican Republic is within the tropical storm routes of the Caribbean region.
The presentation was made during the virtual congress "Smart Cities Solutions for New Challenges, Including a Pandemic" of the IEEE, an event that brought together professionals, public and private entities, infrastructure developers, researchers and academics to present Smart Cities applications and technologies current and future.
Of more than 150 communications that were sent to the congress from 30 different countries, 90 were accepted and within these the INTEC team was chosen to participate in the congress that took place during the week of September 28 to October 1 of the current year .
About the project
Universal access to electrical energy, specifically to non-polluting energy, is one of the Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations, due to its impact on human and economic development, the degree project raises.
However, it highlights that even with the important advances in the electricity sector in the Dominican Republic, there are sectors of the population without access to electricity, as is the case of the San Pablo 2 community in the municipality of La Victoria in Santo Domingo Norte .
This article proposes the use of an interconnected microgrid, with photovoltaic solar generation (PV) and a storage system with lithium-ion batteries for the electrification of São Paulo 2 and the determination of the technical-economic viability of the microgrid design. proposed using the HOMER and DIgSILENT.
The results show the optimal configuration of the microgrid, considering the net current cost, the levelized cost of energy and the availability of energy. Likewise, the distribution of the components and loads to obtain a tension behavior and a technically acceptable margin of losses.
