Doctorate in Environmental Sciences

The Dominican Republic, aware of the enormous present and future challenges, makes enormous efforts to continuously increase the quality of the education system, as well as to promote scientific research and innovation. In that sense, the Instituto Tecnológico de Santo Domingo (INTEC), an institution of recognized national prestige, has within its essential purposes to contribute in a continuous way and of high impact to the sustainable development of the Dominican Republic, to achieve a quality, modern and competitive higher education at international level.

Currently, the nation faces growing challenges in the area of ​​environmental sciences, making it a priority to train qualified human personnel who are committed and capable of generating their own knowledge, as well as directing and executing research that offers solutions to the most diverse problems of society. Dominican, regional and global, taking into account that the Dominican Republic is classified as one of the countries with the highest global climate risk.

The doctoral program in Environmental science offered at INTEC represents a great opportunity to train professionals at the highest level capable of promoting the development of scientific research and innovation, which will allow facing technological challenges in topics of greater relevance and topicality focused on the strategic objectives of the Republic. Dominican Republic, and framed within the mission of the institution.

1. To train researchers, managers and managers of scientific processes and technological innovation at the highest level, both nationally and internationally, with the capacity to develop research, prepare other professionals and lead processes in the field of environmental sciences and contribute to the sustainable development of the country.
2. Develop the capacities for the development of scientific research with a holistic approach, communication and argumentation of environmental science processes in the environment of Dominican society.
3. Make a high impact contribution to the integration of environmental sciences to sustainable development and technological innovation, to achieve more innovative solutions of the main environmental problems of the Dominican Republic, as well as the region, using scientific methods and working in groups multi and transdisciplinary.

The Doctorate program in Environmental Sciences is aimed at national and foreign professionals with a master's degree, in areas of knowledge related to the program.

Professionals with a master's degree with the following profile may enter:

• Graduates of degree level in Bachelor's degrees in Biology, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering or related careers.
• Graduates of master's level in the following areas of knowledge: Environmental Sciences, Earth Sciences, Biological Sciences, Basic Sciences, Economic Sciences or related to the program.
• Graduates of master's level, in Environmental Sciences and in Sanitary and Environmental Engineering, which are offered in INTEC.

The graduates will have the competences to fulfill scientific leadership functions, scientific research, and development and innovation processes. In addition, they will have the skills to lead scientific groups and research projects in their corresponding field of action and influence.

Graduates of the doctorate will have developed the competences to perform functions as researchers, professors, leaders and managers of scientific processes and technological innovation in the field of environmental sciences and technologies in institutions of the public, private sectors, in non-governmental organizations , with national and international projection. They will be specialized professionals, with a high criterion about the interdisciplinarity required in Environmental Sciences.

Graduates of the Doctorate Program in Environmental Sciences will demonstrate the following competences:

• Ability to identify and solve problems that demonstrate the application of scientific processes, through creative and innovative initiatives.
• Capacity for critical reasoning and autonomous learning showing the potential to self-evaluate and recognize their strengths.
• Capacity for organization and planning using oral and written communication with scientific language.
• Ability to use the latest information and communication technologies and manage increasingly complex systems of work and technological management related to the field of study.
• Capacities to assess the complexity and uncertainty in their environment and society interconnection.

The program of Doctorate in Environmental Sciences it will allow the graduate to develop in the academic and research field. They may carry out their professional practice in any area related to environmental management at any social level in the following areas or topics:

• Presentation, execution or evaluation of environmental projects.
• Environmental control and inspection agencies.
• Preparation of regulations and other documents of legal origin related to the environment.
• Preparation and approval of environmental licenses.
• Management and approval of protected areas.
• Consulting and environmental consultancies.
• Solution of environmental litigation.
• Training of human resources in environmental issues.
• Development and environmental technological innovation and environmental engineering.

The study plan is divided into two fundamental periods:

1. Teaching period: conformed by four (4) modules, in which the essential knowledge common to all doctoral students is taught, essential to address scientific research in environmental science topics, in addition to courses related to research methodology, formulation and project management.
2. Research period or doctoral training: the applicant develops a research project accompanied by an advisor. Made up of the following blocks:
   • Comprehensive evaluation.
   • Approval of the thesis project.
   • Partial thesis activities. Sizes of results.
   • Publication of articles in scientific journals.
   • Presentation of papers at scientific events.
   • Pre-defense of the PhD thesis.
   • Thesis defense.

General description of the study plan:

1. Teaching period or applicant school.

   Its objective is the theoretical and methodological training of PhD students. Which consists of compulsory subjects in the area of ​​knowledge of environmental sciences, in addition to courses in research methodology, formulation and project management, among others, which will allow them to acquire the knowledge, skills and abilities to address the fundamental strategies of the scientific research that guides the realization of research projects.

   For the approval of the research project, the doctoral student must present a doctoral thesis project in writing and in the established format and make an oral presentation according to the time and procedure established.

2. Research period or doctoral training.

   To enter the period of research or doctoral training the PhD student must have obtained the credits corresponding to the teaching period.

   The research period lasts a minimum of two (2) years and a maximum of four (4) years for the applicant to defend the doctoral thesis. The activities are developed in the modality of tutoring. The PhD student will develop his research work under the direction of his advisor following the training plan previously approved by the PhD thesis committee. The study plan for the investigation period consists of the following mandatory activities:

   • Presentation of the thesis project in research support programs.
   • Exhibition of the progress of the research in at least three scientific events of the program.
   • At least one scientific publication in a journal referenced, preferably of impact, in the Web of Science.
   • At least two papers presented at scientific events related to the environmental issue, one of them of an international nature with a review committee.
   • Thesis predefined exercise.
   • Thesis defense exercise.

1. Possess a master's degree with research orientation with a minimum index of three (3.00) points on a scale of four (4.0) or eighty (80) points on the 100 scale.
2. Complete the admission form, available online at: admisiones.intec.edu.do
3. Deposit in the Admissions Department the required documents and the receipt of payment of the admission application and the payment of the postgraduate admission test for doctorate level.
4. Obtain the minimum approval score in the entrance exam for the programs of the graduate level.
5. Interview with the Program Coordinator.
6. All those requirements considered indispensable according to the nature and orientation of the program, approved by the Academic Council.
